Choose the Right Boot and Blade for Your Skill Level

Written By: Riedell | September 18, 2014

One of the things that we love most about the sport of figure skating is there are always new skills to learn! From your first time out on the ice to the first time you stick the landing on a double axel, that sense of accomplishment keeps you coming back for more. While you’re mastering these new skills, keep in mind each figure skate boot is made differently to accommodate various skill levels.

When purchasing boots and blades, always think about what types of jumps and spins you will be practicing in the near future. Beginners practicing stops on the ice have completely different boot and blade needs than someone who has been skating for years and practices high-level skills.

As important as finding the right boot and blade is, it’s not always easy to figure out which ones align with your skill level. Take a look at the chart below. We’ve divided skating skills into six distinct categories, or “Riedell Ranges.” Each Riedell Range matches up to at least five of our skates and three of our blades so you are sure to have a variety of options regardless of skill level.

Use the chart below to determine which boot and blade are right for you or your skater. Save it or print it out for easy access – it will help you find the skate that fits your style!

Happy skating!
